LONDON CYCLE NETWORK

The London Cycle Network (LCN) comprises of over 1000 miles of cycle routes throughout London.
The network of cycle routes was originally devised by the GLC and the London Cycling Campaign in the late ‘70s.
All the London boroughs have agreed to pursue this project and about one third of it is completed so far.
The project has been funded since 1995 by the Government Office for London, who this financial year have awarded £5.5m for the whole of London.
The Traffic Director for London will also be contributing to the project by paying for cycle crossings where the LCN meets the Red Route network.
For ease of co-ordination London has been broken up into 5 Sectors and Hackney is the lead borough for the Central Sector.
Hackney’s share of the funding this financial year is £80k.

The Council is aiming to improve the existing North-South and Maurice Hope cycle routes this financial year.
Some of the criteria applied to LCN schemes are that they should be on the network, they encourage cycling and they are rideable by a competent 12 year old cyclist.

For 2000 / 2001 officers propose to bid for funds for upgrading and completing the Market Porters cycle route. Some of the measures we are considering are:

Widening pavements (and thus narrowing roads) to allow cyclists to use them.	Segregates cyclists from cars making them safer.	Reduces car capacity of road or removes parking.
Traffic lights at the Narroway / Mare Street / Amhurst Road junction.	Improves safety and convenience for cyclists and buses.	Reduces car capacity.
